These Shoes are Killing Me

While they may not actually be killing you, your shoes could be doing damage to your feet and bones. Studies show that nine out of ten women wear shoes that do not fit - either in size or support. High heels tend to have pointed narrow toe boxes that force toes into an unnatural triangular shape, and place greater pressure on the ball of the foot. Ill-fitting shoes can cause bunions, corns, and even bone damage.
The American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society recommend the following when purchasing shoes:
  • Heels should be no higher that 2.25 inches
  • Try on shoes at the end of the day, when your feet are usually swollen from the day's activities
  • The space between the longest toe and shoe should be 1/2 inch
  • Judge a shoe on how it fits your foot not by the size marked on the box
  • Your feet should never be conformed to fit the shape of a shoe.
